E-Bike Handlebars Loose or Wobbly
Stem bolts and headset play
Quick answer
Stop riding. Tighten the stem bolts evenly, then check for headset play by holding the front brake and rocking the bike. Use the torque printed on the stem.
Try this first
Free, and each takes under 5 minutes.
In plain English
Handlebars can come loose where they clamp into the stem, or the stem can come loose on the fork. A knocking feeling when braking means the headset (the bearings that let the fork turn) has play. Most stems have the right tightness printed on them.
Watch how it's done
Video by Park Tool. It may show a regular bike: on an e-bike, switch off and remove the battery first, and unplug the motor cable before taking off a hub-motor wheel.
Step-by-step checklist
Work from the top. Steps go from free and easy to shop jobs. Switch the bike off before touching any connector. Tick each step as you go. Your progress is saved on this device.
